Why You Should Set Your Thanksgiving Table Now

Thanksgiving is just around the corner—can you believe it? 🍂 If you’re hosting this year, there’s always a long to-do list, from planning the menu to cleaning the house and, of course, cooking up a delicious feast. But one task you can tackle now to save time and stress later is setting your Thanksgiving table.

Taking the time to arrange your table a week in advance means one less thing to worry about on the big day, leaving you free to focus on cooking, hosting, and actually enjoying the holiday. Here’s how to do it:

Step 1: Lay Your Foundation

Begin your table setting with a base of greenery or florals to create a natural, inviting foundation. Use a garland of eucalyptus, sprigs of rosemary, or a mix of seasonal blooms arranged down the center of the table. A simple way to elevate faux greenery is to pick up local, seasonally inspired florals and mix them into your arrangement. For a cohesive look, coordinate your greenery or florals with your overall color scheme. This simple touch adds texture and sets the tone for a warm and festive gathering.

Step 2: Add Layers

Bring in your chargers, dinner plates, and salad plates. Chargers are a simple way to add elegance to any table setting, and layering dinnerware creates a beautiful, dimensional look. We picked up these Woven Raffia chargers and Autum Leaf inspired plates from World Market, they always have amazing hosting pieces at an affordable price! Place a folded napkin on top of the plates or use a napkin ring for an elevated touch.

Step 3: Arrange Silverware and Glassware

For a formal table setting, follow these placement guidelines:

Forks go on the left of the plate.

Knives and spoons go on the right, with the knife blade facing the plate.

Glassware is placed above the knife, with water glasses directly above and wine glasses slightly to the right.

Extra Tip my favorite way to remember which side of the plate your glassware belongs on is to make a OK signs with both of your hands. Your left hand should make a “B” for Butter, and your right hand should make a “D” for Drink.

Step 4: Incorporate Seasonal Decor

This is where you can let your creativity shine! Add candles, a centerpiece, or seasonal touches like mini pumpkins, sprigs of greenery, or pinecones. All of our candles and decor came from our local Home Sense, I always think that’s the best place to shop for affordable candles in fun colors and shapes!

Tip: Elevate your tablescape with tall taper candles as the centerpiece for a dramatic effect. The height draws attention and creates a stunning focal point that enhances the holiday spirit.

Step 5: Add Personal Touches

Small details make a big impact. Try adding place cards for assigned seating or a small favor like a festive cookie or decorative ornament at each place setting.

Why Set Your Table Now?

By setting your table ahead of time, you’ll have one less thing on your plate come Thanksgiving Day. Plus, you’ll have the chance to admire your beautiful table all week long, and your guests will feel extra special when they arrive to a perfectly set table.
